Dinner with Industrial Speaker, John Hull, PE

 Lots of good cheer among chemistry colleagues and friends ! 

First, Thanks to John Hull for sharing his own and his consulting company’s story and work on a wide scope of environmental, infrastructure and energy issues. 
Secondly, CONGRATULATIONS to many as described below:
* The Detroit Local ACS section, represented by Chair Denise Grimsley and Recognition Committee Chair Sue White, surprised our 4 Section Organizers of the 2018 Glass City Chemistry Conference, GCCC, (CERM 2018) with Salute to Excellence Awards.
Those receiving the awards were Toledo Section Chair for 2018, Brenda Snyder and GCCC Champion; GCCC General Chair Edith Kippenhan (Past Section Chair etc); Dr. Nate Beres, GCCC Program Chair and current Section Treasurer; and Zane Wilhelm, GCCC Treasurer and current Section Chair Elect. WELL DONE!
* Although not in attendance, Somnath Dutta was recognized with a Salute to Excellence Award for his efforts and leadership of running the Section’s high school Chemistry Olympiad program for multiple years; presented by Brenda Snyder on behalf of the Section.
* Brenda Snyder also presented Salute to Excellence Awards to the current Presidents of our most active ACS student chapters: University of Toledo (Michelle Klingberg) and Heidelberg University (Kevin Scrudders) for their energy, community outreach activities, and overall excellence.
* Also unfortunately not in attendance, 3 Section Members were recognized for their longevity as ACS members.
* Last but not least, Zane Wilhelm presented a Past Chair ACS pin to Brenda and thanked her for stepping up to the plate as Chair this year and having a successful 2018 leading the Section.
20 attendees enjoyed a delightful evening and buffet dinner.

Toledo Section ACS will be hosting 2 tables this year at STEM-in-the-PARK down at the Perry Field House, Bowling Green State University from 9:30 am - 2 pm.

We will be celebrating the National Chemistry Week 2018 theme:  CHEMISTRY is OUT of this WORLD!

Summer Adieu - Picnic for Family and Friends

August 10 at 5:30 pm  Project SEED and High School Summer Research final presentation

Project SEED & High School Summer Research committee of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at The University of Toledo is pleased to invite you to the final presentations of our high school scientists on August 10, 2018. We will start at 5.30 PM with refreshments and the program will commence at 6 PM. Please find the attached flyer for the details.

We are hosting seven high school summer researches this year and they have very exciting findings to share with you.

8 total FREE hands-on Outreach Programs at Ohio Summer Food Service Program: Kids Eat Here FREE location. Target: economically disadvantaged youth

7 in conjunction with City of Toledo Youth Commission and Dept of Parks and Recreation.

Tues June 26, 11am – 12 pm @ Ottawa Park     (40 youth and counselor attendees;  5 volunteers) 

Wed June 27, 11am – 12pm @ Wahlbridge Park (22 youth and counselor attendees; 5 volunteers)

Tues July 10,  11am – 12pm @Believe Center (17 youth and counselors;   9 volunteers )

Wed July 11, 11am – 12 pm @ Wilson Park (15 participants  4 volunteers)

Tues July 17, 1pm – 2 pm @ Friendship Park/Community Center   (14 youth/adults;  5 volunteers) 

Wed July 18, 1pm – 2:30 pm @ Savage Park      (2 groups combined total of 36 youth and adults;     4 volunteers) 

Tues July 24 @ Redemeer Lutheran Church  (11am - 1:30pm;   2 programs:  15 teens + 24 kids with 6 counselors and 4 adults = total of 49;  3 volunteers)

June 14-16:   The Glass City Chemistry Conference 2018

The Toledo Section Chemistry Conference is scheduled for June 14-16, 2018, on the University of Toledo campus. The conference starts Thursday evening with a social and dinner, 5:30 - 10 pm. A keynote is also planned. Friday is a full day of oral presentations and workshops, including programming for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as a student social in the evening. Posters will be available all day Friday, with authors present from 5:30 - 7:00 pm. Some of the divisions hosting sessions are Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Nanochemistry, and Chemical Education. Saturday, June 16th, is Teacher’s Day, from 8:30 am - 2:30 pm, which will include oral presentations and workshops.

FREE Summer 2018 Hands-on Outreach Events: June - July 

4 Summer Outreach events this summer with hands-on chemistry activities and am looking for volunteers to assist.
High school and college students welcome.
All materials and instructions provided. Please check dates and let me know.

In conjunction with Community Learning Centers of Wood County Summer Educational Services program:

Tuesday June 12  STEM^2/ STEAM Day at BGSU Field House for Wood County Summer Program from noon-3 pm 
 
 275 attendees !   3 volunteers for all 3 hours!  Had fun with Wiggly Jiggly Calcium Alginate Worms and Bubbles
Group targeted: economically disadvantaged youth 

 In conjunction with TLCPL Summer 2018 Reading Program: READING ROCKS

 Chemistry Rocks:   Join our friends from the Toledo Section of the American Chemical Society with hands on chemistry fun. Tune in for some rock and roll chemistry; it’s everywhere.  ROCK ON!  Suitable for ages 9-15, tweens and teens. 

Thursday June 14  at Washington Branch Library:    setup at 1:30; program 2:00 - 3:00 followed by cleanup til 3:30 pm ;  13 attendees; 7 volunteers
 
Thursday July 12 at Waterville Library:   setup at 1:30; program 2:00 - 3:00 followed by cleanup til 3:30 pm  17 attendees; 7 volunteers
 
Friday July 13  at Toledo Heights Branch Library: setup at 2; program 2:30 - 3:30 followed by cleanup til 4:00 pm  22 attendees; 4 volunteers

CANDY CHEMISTRY Library Outreach Tues Feb 20, 2018 at Locke Branch Library 3-5 pm

The first Toledo Section ACS community library outreach program this year is scheduled for Tuesday, February 20 from 3- 5 pm.

This 2 hour slot includes 1/2 hour for setup and cleanup.

Program actually runs from 3:30 - 4:30 and is geared for children from 8-16 years old.  
This Library Outreach program is Free to attendees.

Program:  Chemistry of Candy.
Location:  Locke Branch Library of Toledo-Lucas County Public Library System
                 703 Miami St, Toledo, OH 43605
Date:        Tuesday, February 20 from 3- 5 pm.  setup begins at 3 pm; 1 hr hands-on program begins at 3:30 pm

I'm looking for a few volunteers to help me out with this fun, sticky, sweet hands-on program, as we will likely be full with 24 children.
All materials and instructions will be provided.
Please bring your own goggles; and you are encouraged to wear a chemistry t shirt.
